The review. An in-depth analysis of new and existing restaurants in the Vail Valley.
I was prepared to dislike this change-of-ownership-place because it was a branch of the same name from Aspen.
Mezzaluna
An open (probably noisy when truly busy) dining room with attached bar displaced the old steak and salad bar restaurant previously occupying the commercial dining room space in the Lion's Square Lodge.
We avoided going here during last winter's ski season due to what seemed to be an overpriced menu that was also appeared to be creatively uninspired. This fall with nothing else on the plate one night we took the plunge and walked over early one evening when ads indicated that prices were chopped in half, and we knew that crowds had left the valley.
Highlights: Unfortunately there was nothing to complain about. If that sounds a bit like negative thinking, trust me, I was in a bad mood when we entered the restaurant. Service was just right. The pastas were delightful. The crme Brule was nicely warm and crispy on top. The wine list was simple but sufficiently interesting. And best of all the price was right - due to the half off specials.
Lowlights: None.
Over a busy holiday weekend the open seating arrangement will probably lead to
too much noise for easy conversation. But for now, we reward a
to this new establishment - and even regret the bias against
something from our cousins over the hill.
