9/3 - 4

This was clearly our last gasp camp/fish trip for the summer of 2026.  It was a real shorty too.  Since the White River and pretty much every other stream that we enjoy were all shut down in the afternoons due to the ongoing drought, we had lunch at home and drove up through Meeker late in the afternoon on Monday.  Arrived at the plateau above still being filled Lake Avery around 4:00 and went directly to our camping spot, fed the dogs, and set up our foldable table & chairs and enjoyed a nice happy hour before downing some excellent pasta with Bolognese sauce.

The next morning's breakfast was also a good one as Sue had made some stuffed French toast with maple syrup and bacon for that meal.

It was a relatively warm morning so I got started casting around 8:30 while Sue to the dogs on a nice long walk up near the Elk Creek Ranch area.

As it turned out the river was actually running about a half foot higher than the previous week and more importantly was also several degrees colder that day..  Nice for the fish, but not good for the midge hatches that didn't begin at an early hour. Nevertheless about an hour later some bugs did start coming off the bank and water and the catching started all over again..

And another decent morning it was.  Using some tiny comparaduns alternated with an occasional miniature bead head nymph brought about the same number of fish to the release point (or self release) as happened the previous week.

 So we can term the day another nice one - while otherwise noting that the fish in this somewhat larger stream are holding up just fine and should be happy next year if conditions improve with better water flows..
