June, 2023
6/20-21: Our first overnighter of the summer was taken at Williams Fork Reservoir. Let's just call it a beta test. The camping turned out fine despite frost on all our outside gear the next morning. It's still simply too cold to have much fun. But the dogs enjoy the outing. Fishing was non existent. Given some timing complications, the very few casts I made in the reservoir and inlet stream were futile. Water flows are running way too high everywhere.
It looks like mid
July will be the first time that something like the lower Gunnison may be
fishable. Until then we'll take weekly camping trips and try to get in
some hiking. Here are three quick pics of the lake and the dogs. Not
a very interesting report if I don't say.

6/29-30: Unfortunately another bust of a camp/fish trip. This was supposed to be a two nighter up and around the White River east of Meeker. We knew the White itself would be way to high to fish, but hoped that Lake Avery (aka Big Beaver Lake), might be kind enough to let us hook and release a few of the decent rainbows or cutts that inhabit the reservoir.
We arrived in that area after an early lunch at home but found that the Oyster Lake trail we'd hoped to hike to kill some time was already occupied by some folks we didn't want to bother, so we drove back to Avery and did a short walk around the western shoreline with me doing a bit of casting here and there. Nothing doing. Wrong time of day to start with.
Made camp that night above the lake and awoke again in the morning to frosty temps. Had our regular mocha/coffee warm ups and then drove back to the lakeside parking lot. Sue opted out of trying any casting in the clearly mirror-like surface of the lake. Too cold for any hatches - including the normal batch of mosquitos. Never say die me went off anyway and did have a couple of bumps before eventually hooking and releasing a decent 16 inch or so rainbow. That was it for the fishing on the trip.
We then made the drive up to Trapper's Lake and tried our regular large pool on the outlet stream (the North Fork of the White), but had nothing happen there either. Continued on up Ripple Creek Pass and over to Vaughan Lake which was too cloudy to fish (and also unpleasant due to more cloud cover and plummeting temperatures.) Kept going towards Yampa and drove up the Sheraff (sp) Reservoir road for a piece before completely giving up on the second night camp out due to cold weather. So much for another trip.
