8/8-10:  One of our favorite annual camping/fishing trips is the Almont Triangle loop.  This year due to the drought and very low water conditions throughout the state, the outing was something of a dud.

We were able to cast on a variety of waters along the way and mostly unsuccessfully.  Started with a half hour on the outlet stream of Twin Lakes just above its confluence with the Arkansas River.  Missed a few "annoyance" strikes, but killed enough time there for the burger place in Buena Vista to start serving by the time we arrived in that town.

After broaching Cottonwood Pass we drove to the upper Taylor River above the reservoir where Sue released a couple of smallish browns and I struck out completely.  Lower down on the Taylor it was a similar waste of time.  Happily when we arrived at our camping spot on the plateau of the Triangle, no one else was around and we enjoyed our regular delicious lobster roll dinner and a nice chardonnay.

Next morning we made our way up the East River through Crested Butte and over Kebler Pass to the little Anthracite Creek stream where we normally have some decent success on the wild rainbows that live there.  Not this time around.  A few strikes and played fish, and that was about it.

Our plan to fish the Crystal near the town of Marble also fell through when we noticed the stream was murky from an overnight thunderstorm, so we gave up on that idea along with camping on the overlook of the Raggeds.  Drove back through Glenwood Springs and Rifle and made our way up to the White River.  Before camping above Lake Avery again, we tried both the North and South Forks of the White with more very limited success.

A nice evening meal and camp out followed.  In the morning we did our regular drive down to the lake shore parking lot and made the short hike to a cove where we actually did have some decent releases of the local rainbows.  Nothing good sized but at least a bit of action.  Down on the main stem of the White I spent a short hour wading the stretch of water that had been very good a week ago.  Today it was a complete bust.

So much for this trip this year.  While the camping has been fine, the fishing has sucked.  Water flows are too low and water temperatures too high, so we'll give up the sport for the rest of the summer and hope the fish survive these awful weather conditions.
