Upper Colorado - October 22,1999
Basically a fruitless fishing expedition, but did some learning about water. With a nice clear, bright fall day at hand, the dog & I traveled East through Silverthorne & then North past Green Mountain Reservoir to revisit the middle Colorado River above Kremmling. As we hadn't been up Muddy Creek since the Wolford Dam was built our first drive headed up Highway 40 a few miles North of Kremmling where we dropped down a dirt road to the dam itself.
Muddy Creek actually looks pretty good where it exits the dam, and although we didn't try it today, that appears the best point at which to access the better flowing water. As we headed back to K. we drove down a BLM road labeled "Skyline Drive". It's actually a jeep road, but is navigable by most any vehicle under dry conditions. At the end of the road by the stream there's decent access too, but most of the creek has reverted to winding slow stretches that aren't particularly attractive for casting. But given the creek's new life by reason of the tailwater created by the dam, this water can only improve over time.
Heading back up US 40 we pulled off at the Sunset Bridge public access on the Colorado and did some casting in some very attractive holes & runs. Unfortunately only one nice 16" brown struck and quickly released, but this water is very nice looking.
Later we tried the bank water in Hot Sulfur Springs and a short stretch above Byers Canyon with similar success. Traveled back to Silverthorne by way of Ute Pass, stopping once on Williams Creek - see above for success notes. In Silverthorne after gassing up we fished the popular stretch of the Blue in town below the Factory Outlets and had pretty much the same level of success.
