Last Logbook Entry  for previous day

4/6 - 12:  A return to St. George's Caye in Belize

We've been coming here at least annually since 2016.  That means not only do we like the place, but it says it has not lost its luster over the years.  While we know it's a good three star resort, what we don't understand are the five star ratings that guests give to this and similar places that are miles away from experiences that the Ritz, Four Seasons, Burj al Arab, etc. offer elsewhere.  Please try to call a spade a spade despite how enjoyable the experience was while there.  OK.  Enough of that.

What's particularly good for us is that it is an easy 6 hour (with short layover) flight from Tucson.  Then a quick half hour boat ride gets us to the island in plenty of time for happy hour and dinner.  A much more pleasant trip than what we experience trying to get to somewhere in the Bahamas in one day.

We have a nice accommodation in what's called "the Villa".  At six in the morning we get a tray with orange juice and a pot of decent coffee that we can enjoy on the deck.  Breakfasts are fine, ditto for lunch, and dinners have improved with the chef finally not overcooking (most) of the vegetables and mains.

The nightly rum punch is decent, but we've learned to buy the wines we prefer at the duty free station in the airport before we head to the island.  With previous bad experiences of the resort's wines due not only prices but too much time sitting in hot temperatures, what we're doing is a far better alternative.

So what do we like the most here.  The people are great - always friendly and helpful.  The kayaks we use every day have comfortable seatbacks and decent paddles - things we rarely find elsewhere.  There's an easy one mile hike around the eastern perimeter of the island to work off a few of the calories we input daily.  The dock offers generally interesting fishing for tarpon at night and in the early morning.  While wade fishing is not easy on St; George, it is much better close by on the island to the west of Shaka Caye, and there is a bit of it in places along the shore at St. George.

Here are a few unedited clips of some shots of the fishing and a few of the resort itself:
